‟ The Power of Peers – A Strategy for Schools”
by
Patti A. Logsdon – Project Coordinator, Kentucky Peer Support Network
Research tells us that making friends can be especially hard for students with significant disabilities. Peer Support Arrangements and Peer Networks can help foster relationships IN THE SCHOOL SETTING by bringing students together. Peer Support Arrangements train students (usually a student with a significant disability along with one to three peers) to provide academic and social support to each other during ongoing learning activities. Beyond the classroom, a group of peers (usually three to six) form a Peer Network together with a student with a significant disability, to help foster social connections and friendships between classes, at lunch, in extracurricular activities, or beyond the school day. School staff facilitate these groups to ensure their success. Please invite folks from your child’s school to learn more about these evidence-based strategies!
Patti Logsdon is Project Coordinator for the Kentucky Peer Support Network Project, which aims to increase learning and inclusive activities between students with and without significant disabilities. The Kentucky Peer Support Network Project is an initiative of the Human Development Institute at the University of Kentucky, with funding provided by the Commonwealth Council on Developmental Disabilities. As the mom of a young adult son with autism spectrum disorder, Patti is very passionate about meaningful inclusion for people with disabilities.
