Service Dogs for Autism 101: From Application to Fundraising to Incorporating a Service Dog in School and At Home
Jo Grayson is a parent and an Autism Society of the Bluegrass board member. Jo has an 11-year-old son named Thatcher, with a level 3 Autism Diagnosis “requiring substantial support.” Thatcher also has a diagnosis of Celiac and Epilepsy. Jo is currently a Direct Support Provider at Path Forward of Kentucky and for her son through Participant Directed Services with the Michelle P. Waiver, but previously taught developmental English composition at EKU, substituted all grade levels at Fayette County Public Schools, and substituted elementary levels in Rowan County. Along with her time spent volunteering for ASBG, Jo also volunteers at her son’s school on a regular basis. Jo has spent a significant amount of time learning about Autism and effective treatments, such as therapies, ways to communicate such as PECS, augmentative communication devices, and American Sign Language. Through ASBG she found 4 Paws for Ability, which is a leading non-profit organization that trains service dogs to help those with Autism and other disorders. Her family raised $15,000 and spent two weeks training with her son’s service dog, Saul in Xenia, OH. Saul came home just before Christmas in 2017 and a few months later, joined Thatcher at school. Now Thatcher and Saul are inseparable and Saul keeps Thatcher safe on a daily basis.
