Becoming a Dog Person: One Family’s Journey to Getting am Autism Assistance Service Dog.”

Jo Grayson is a parent and an Autism Society of the Bluegrass board member. Jo has a 9 year old son named Thatcher, with a level 3 Autism Diagnosis” requiring substantial support.” Thatcher also has a diagnosis of Celiac and Epilepsy.
Jo is currently an administrative assistant at Guarantee Pest Control, but previously taught developmental English composition at EKU, substituted all grade levels at Fayette County Public Schools, and substituted elementary levels in Rowan County. Jo has spent a significant amount of time learning about Autism and effective treatments, such as therapies, ways to communicate such as PECS, augmentative communication devices, and American Sign Language. Through ASBG she found 4 Paws for Ability, which is a leading non-profit organization that trains service dogs to help those with Autism and other disorders. Her family raised $15,000 and is now working to raise enough money to cover expenses for the two week training trip to Xenia, OH in November 2017
