Autism Friendly Community Initiative

The incidence rate of ASD is now 1:59. Autism starts in childhood and doesn’t end when a person becomes an adult. As we work to improved community understanding of autism is critical to improving outcomes for children, youth and adults with ASD.

An Autism Friendly Community will promote safety, respect and acceptance of differences while providing meaningful, inclusive choices with respect to supports, services, friends, allies, and living circumstances.

3 programs that have made a difference –PACT, Smart 911, and Lexington Public Library Sensory Supports:

1. Police Autism Community Training (PACT) http://www.pactautism.com

1 in 5 individuals with Autism report being stopped or questioned by the police at least once by their mid-20s. Elopement attempts occurs in approximately 50% of this population. Abbey Love, Kirsten Scheil and Suzanne Williams have all been working hard to train First Responders about Autism.
