Navigating the Functional Assessment Process:
A Tool for ParentsMark Samudre and Megan Jones
This training is designed to help parents become more familiar with how a school identifies a treatment to challenging behaviors based on an understanding of its function. Trainers will provide information to parents on the functional assessment process and the professional requirements school staff have in ensuring appropriate interventions are selected. By becoming more familiar with the functional assessment process, parents will be able to meaningfully participate in future meetings with their child’s IEP team and/or a school’s behavioral support staff. Megan Jones began her career as a special education teacher in Lexington, Kentucky, at an alternative middle and high school. She spent her last two years leading the special education department at the alternative school and has spoken at many conferences concerning the topic of teaching students with different modalities. She received a master’s in teacher leadership and is currently working on her PhD in learning and behavior disorders. Megan is also working on her board certification to become a behavior analyst. She is passionate about helping at-risk high school students transition successfully into adulthood and in facilitating positive behavior changes with students in alternative settings. Mark Samudre is currently working on his PhD in special education at the University of Kentucky. He is also working on receiving his board certification to become a behavior analyst. Prior to his time as a doctoral student, Mark was an elementary special education teacher in the Washington D.C. Metro area of students with emotional/behavioral disorders. As a teacher, Mark provided support to design and implement individualized behavior management systems for students who were more resistant to typical classroom management procedures. A principal goal of his is to effectively prepare teachers, parents, and caregivers on managing challenging behaviors that impede both social and academic outcomes.
