SpecialCare is a program developed by MassMutual Life Insurance Company that provides access to information and resources to families with dependents, of any age, who have a disability. Our mission is to help educate families and caregivers of people with special needs about the importance and steps in creating a life care plan to help provide a secure financial future.

Gordon Homes is a Financial Advisor with WestPoint Financial Group. He provides objective and customized insurance and investment strategies to help meet the financial needs of his clients. He aims to help clients achieve lifelong financial freedom by building long-term working relationships based on mutual respect, ongoing education and comprehensive planning. Prior to joining WestPoint Financial Group, Gordon spent 35 years with MetLife as a Financial Planner, emphasizing his work as a Special Care Planner. A frequent speaker at parent support group meetings and state conferences, he is nationally recognized in the area of Special Needs planning issues, contributing to articles in The Washington Post, The New York Times, and Kiplinger’s Personal Finance. He is also active in local communities as a member of over 20 support networks in Indiana and Kentucky.

Please join us as the ASBG Presents: Seeing a Brighter Future: Preparing for Meaningful Employment with Dr. Harold L. Kleinert and our own Patti Logsdon

Seeing a Brighter Future, developed by Kentucky Works, is a 2-hour training curriculum to inspire parents of children with significant intellectual disabilities that employment is possible and can be a meaningful part of their son or daughter’s life. Participants will each receive the Brighter Futures Worksheet to guide them through each of the structured activities. This curriculum is designed to enable families to create action steps for youth of any age to prepare for the world of work. Dr. Harold L. Kleinert is Director Emeritus of the Human Development Institute – University Center for Excellence in Developmental Disabilities Education, Research, and Service (UCEDD) at the University of Kentucky, and Professor Emeritus, Department of Rehabilitation Sciences, College of Health Sciences. In his 50 years in the field of developmental disabilities, he has taught students with moderate and severe intellectual disabilities in settings ranging from state institutions to regular classrooms with typical peers. He has directed a broad range of federally funded demonstration and research projects, especially in the area of education of children and youth with significant disabilities, including research focused on alternate assessment, peer tutoring and peer supports, inclusive service-learning opportunities, and transition.

Patti Logsdon of the University of Kentucky’s Human Development Institute, and has worked on the Kentucky Peer Support Network Project, TAALC (Teaching Age-Appropriate Academic Learning via Communication), and Project E3: Educate, Empower, Employ, focusing, respectively, on peer support and relationships, communication, and integrated employment for people with disabilities in Kentucky. As the mom of a son with autism, Patti is very passionate about meaningful inclusion for people with disabilities. Patti has also worked as Parent Coordinator in Fayette County Public School’s Special Education Parent Resource Center, Inclusion Coordinator for the Arc of Kentucky, and Community Living Support Worker for individuals with intellectual and developmental disabilities. Patti is a past board member of the Autism Society of the Bluegrass.

LaDonna Tyler-Gilmore
LaDonna Tyler-Gilmore is a Licensed Clinical Social Worker and a mental health therapist with
Mountain Comprehensive Care as well as the mother to twin 9-year-old’s, Noah and Maggie,
who are on the autism spectrum, which gives her the unique opportunity to have insight and the
therapeutic knowledge to see and relate to individuals and family members impacted by Autism.
Tyler-Gilmore’s interests include helping people who have been diagnosed with Autism, as well
as their family members using a variety of alternative treatment methods other than Applied
Behavioral Analysis (ABA therapy), or in addition to ABA, if it is a service being provided by
an agency outside of Mountain Comprehensive Care. Tyler-Gilmore will discuss some of the
different methods that she uses to help treat people with Autism, as well as have an open
discussion of what some of the most common obstacles are to accessing services, as well as what
services people would like to see become available. Being a licensed clinical social worker
allows a person to have some knowledge what criteria are required to be diagnosed with autism.

Understanding Prior Written Notice
Prior written notice is a legal right guaranteed to caregivers/parents of children/youth with
IEPs. Prior written notice requires the school to send written explanations of any proposed
changes in the child’s educational plan. Prior written notice also requires the school to send
a written notice if the school denies a parent request.
Rebecca DiLoreto is the supervising attorney for the Institute for Compassion in Justice Externship and teaches
Family Law, Children, and the Law. She is the Executive Director of the Institute for Compassion in Justice. Prior,
Professor DiLoreto had a twenty-four year career with the Kentucky Department of Public Advocacy (DPA) in
indigent defense. She served as Post Trial Division Director for DPA for ten years and was the first director of the
Lexington Public Defender’s Office. She also served as the Litigation Director for the Children’s Law Center, Inc.
She has represented young people in juvenile, family and circuit court across the Commonwealth.
