Families for Effective Autism Treatment (FEAT) of Louisville is hosting a Northern Speech Services, Inc. National Rehabilitation Services conference, "Children with Autism Who Have Apraxia of Speech". This conference will feature Nancy R. Kaufman, M.A., CCC-SLP and Tamara S. Kasper, M.S., CCC-SLP, BCaBA. It will be held at Baptist Hospital East, 4000 Kresge Way, Louisville, KY 40207 on Friday, November 11, 2005 from 7:30 a.m. - 4:45 p.m. This program explores the unique needs of children with autism who also have apraxia of speech. In some cases, these children may be unable to speak or have difficulty executing the oral-motor movements necessary to produce isolated phonemes. Other children may produce an adequate repertoire of consonants and vowels in isolation, but may not be able to coordinate the motor movements necessary to produce and combine these units to form syllables, words, phrases, and sentences. Others may attempt to vocally communicate, but may be unintelligible speakers. This clinical program will focus on the evaluation and treatment of children with apraxia of speech. Kaufman's hierarchy of shaping word approximations toward functional vocabulary and language will be presented. Methods for systematically shaping vocalizations through use of the procedures developed by Nancy Kaufman will be discussed and demonstrated. Adaptation of these procedures for children with autism and apraxia will be discussed and demonstrated. Focus will be placed on manipulation of teaching variables that will maintain learner motivation and cooperation during speech production training across different language functions. This program is offered for 0.7 CEUs, (Intermediate level: Professional area).
